Furniture assembly looks simple until the box contains several hardware bags, mirrored panels, left- and right-hand parts, and a wall-restraint step at the end. A good result starts before the first fastener is tightened: confirm the model, check the parts, choose the final location and follow the manufacturer's sequence.

For Chico homeowners, renters, landlords and small offices, furniture assembly can be a single desk or an entire room of flat-pack pieces. Diamond Handyman Service offers furniture assembly in Chico for suitable beds, desks, dressers, wardrobes, bookcases, tables and other ready-to-assemble furniture.

Check the model and all boxes before assembly

Many furniture systems ship in more than one carton. Match the model number on the instructions to the boxes in front of you, then confirm that the major panels and hardware packs are present before building. Starting with one missing rail or bracket can leave a large piece half assembled in the middle of a room.

Keep small hardware separated by type. Screws that look nearly identical can have different lengths or threads, and using the wrong one can damage a panel or interfere with a later step. If the instructions identify a specific fastener for a specific connection, follow that callout rather than substituting by appearance.

Decide where the finished piece will live

A wardrobe or bookcase may be easy to move as panels and difficult to move once assembled. Measure doorways, hall turns, ceiling height and the final wall location before beginning. For a desk, also think about outlet access, chair clearance and cable routing.

If a tall unit requires wall anchoring, the final location matters even more. The restraint needs a suitable connection to the wall and should be installed as directed by the manufacturer. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recommends anchoring top-heavy furniture and following the product's instructions to reduce tip-over hazards.

Beds need the support pieces in the right order

Platform beds, storage beds and frames with center supports can have several similar rails and brackets. The sequence matters because later pieces may depend on earlier connections remaining slightly loose until the frame is squared.

Before the mattress goes on, check that slats, center supports, feet and hardware are installed as intended. A frame that looks finished but is missing a center leg or support rail is not complete. Storage drawers should also move freely without binding against the frame.

Desks and office furniture need more than a square frame

A desk can include drawers, cable trays, shelves, keyboard hardware or an electric lift system. Drawer slides need to be installed on the correct side and at matching heights. On a powered sit-stand desk, cables should have enough slack for the full travel of the top without getting pinched or pulled.

For a home office, placement can be discussed along with picture and mirror hanging, shelving or other finishing jobs. Several related tasks can often be handled as one project discussion.

Dressers and bookcases may require anti-tip restraints

Tall furniture can create a serious tip-over hazard. CPSC's Anchor It! guidance recommends securing top-heavy furniture and televisions and following the manufacturer's anchoring instructions. In February 2026, CPSC again urged consumers to anchor furniture and TVs, noting that tip-over injuries still occur every year.

Use the restraint supplied or specified for the product unless the manufacturer directs otherwise. The wall construction and attachment point matter. A restraint should not be treated as optional merely because the piece appears stable when empty.

CPSC Anchor It! guidance is a useful reference for households with children and for anyone assembling tall storage furniture.

Do not force a part that does not line up

When holes or dowels are badly misaligned, stop and recheck the previous steps. A panel may be upside down, a rail may be on the wrong side, or a connector may have been tightened before the frame was aligned.

Forcing a screw into the wrong hole can strip particleboard or split a finished panel. Backtracking one step is usually better than trying to make an incorrect assembly fit.

Keep packaging until the furniture is complete

The box can contain model information, spare hardware and return instructions that are useful until the piece is fully assembled and tested. Keep packaging nearby until doors, drawers, moving parts and restraints have been checked.

If a part is damaged from the factory, document it before altering it. The manufacturer or retailer may need photos, a part number or packaging information to provide a replacement.

What should you have ready for an assembly appointment?

The unopened furniture, assembly instructions and a clear work area are usually enough. You do not need to sort every screw or unpack every panel in advance. If the item is unusually large, located upstairs or needs to be moved through a tight area, mention that when scheduling.

Photos of the box label or model number can help identify the piece before the visit. If the furniture needs wall anchoring, let us know where you want it positioned so the final location can be considered as part of the assembly.
