A good TV installation starts with the wall, the television and your viewing position. Screen size alone does not determine which mount or fasteners will work. For a Chico home or rental, the aim is a secure installation that feels comfortable from the seat you actually use and leaves cables manageable.
Start with the wall behind the screen
Drywall is a finish, not a complete description of the supporting structure. Wood studs, metal framing, plaster and masonry call for different mounting methods. The bracket manufacturer’s instructions must match the wall assembly, television weight and attachment points. A generic bag of anchors is not a substitute for checking those details.
A full-motion arm places different demands on its attachment when extended. An existing bracket should be checked before being reused with a new screen, even if the bolt pattern appears to fit. Damaged wall material, unknown backing or uncertain utilities need investigation before drilling. We discuss these choices on our TV mounting service page.
Choose the height from your seating position
Start with where your eyes naturally rest when seated. A high installation can look impressive in an empty room but become uncomfortable during a movie. Tape marking the screen outline can help compare positions before holes are made. Leave space for a soundbar, cabinet doors and any nearby switches.
A fireplace location deserves extra consideration. Heat, wall construction and the television manufacturer’s clearance requirements all matter. A tilting bracket does not solve an unsuitable heat exposure or attachment surface. Another wall may provide a better result.
Decide how cables will travel
A paintable surface raceway can organize visible cables without opening the wall. Concealed routes require suitable cable types and a lawful power arrangement. A television’s ordinary power cord should not simply be pushed into a wall cavity. New outlets and other electrical alterations may need an electrician and permits.
Think about access to HDMI ports and streaming equipment before final placement. Leave enough appropriate cable movement for an articulating mount, without pinched leads or loose loops that catch. The neatest setup is one you can still service later.
Rentals and furniture need separate attention
If you rent, obtain the owner’s approval for the installation and the proposed cable route. Mounting the screen does not secure a tall cabinet or bookcase below it. The CPSC’s Anchor It guidance explains TV and furniture tip-over prevention.
## Fixed, tilting or full-motion: what changes?
A fixed bracket keeps a television close to the wall and suits a room where the main seating is directly in front of it. A tilting bracket allows an angle adjustment, but it does not solve every problem caused by mounting a screen too high. A full-motion arm can serve seating in different parts of a room; it also needs clearance to move without hitting a corner, shelf or nearby door.
Extending a television away from the wall changes the forces on its mounting points. Choose the bracket and attachment method for the actual television, wall and intended movement. A weight rating alone is not proof that an existing installation is suitable. The television's mounting-hole pattern, the bracket's compatible sizes and its instructions all matter.
A clean installation includes the space around the screen
Think about a soundbar, game console and streaming device as part of the layout. Equipment needs appropriate ventilation, usable connections and a place to sit or attach securely. An outlet hidden behind the television can look tidy while still being difficult to reach if the bracket leaves too little clearance.
A surface cable cover may be the simplest way to organize visible leads without opening the wall. Concealed routing needs suitable cable types and a permitted electrical solution where required; ordinary power cords should not be improvised as in-wall wiring. Once mounted, the television should have room for its cables through the bracket's intended range of movement. For related wall installations, read about mounting mirrors and shelves.
Can an existing wall mount stay?
Possibly, if its condition, compatibility and attachment are suitable. We should not promise reuse from the television’s diagonal measurement alone. Tell us the model if you have it, or simply send a photo of the screen and wall. You do not need to identify the wall construction yourself. For other wall-mounted items, see our mirror and shelf guide.
