You do not need to prepare a detailed report before calling a handyman. Tell us what you would like fixed or installed. A short conversation is enough to start, and photos can help when they are easy to send.
Once the work is agreed, a few practical arrangements can make the visit easier. The aim is to make room for the repair, not turn booking help into another project for you.
Explain the problem in everyday words
“The door rubs at the top” is useful. So is “the drawer falls off its track” or “I need this mirror mounted.” You do not need to name a hinge type, identify a wall anchor or know why something failed. Describing what happens is more helpful than guessing a repair.
If there are several tasks, mention them together so we can discuss the whole scope. Put anything urgent or particularly inconvenient first. A multi-task handyman visit may suit related small repairs, subject to scope and scheduling.
Photos are helpful, not an entry requirement
A wider photo shows where the work is, and a closer photo can show damage or hardware. For an installation, a product photo or link can help establish what you want fitted. Do not climb, dismantle anything or reach into an unsafe area just to take a picture.
You can text project photos to (530) 250-5382 or email them to info@chicohandymanservice.com. If you prefer to explain the job by phone, that is fine too. Photos can start a conversation but may not reveal conditions behind a wall or inside a fixture.
Discuss materials before buying them
Check whether you should supply the item or whether materials need to be selected after the repair is assessed. Similar-looking parts can have different dimensions, mounting patterns and load ratings. Buying a replacement early can create an extra return trip if it does not fit.
If you already have the product, keep its instructions and mounting parts together. For paint or finish matching, an existing label can help, but an old container is not a guarantee of an invisible touch-up. Age, lighting and surrounding wear can affect the match.
Clear only what is reasonably necessary
If practical, move small valuables and loose items away from the immediate work area. For cabinet work, that might mean clearing the affected drawer. For a wall installation, it might mean moving a small decoration. You do not need to empty the room automatically.
If heavy furniture or other obstacles are involved, tell us rather than trying to move them alone. Any help with moving or extra access work should be discussed as part of the visit. Keep children and pets away from tools and the immediate work area while work is underway.
Agree on the work before it starts
A short review at the beginning helps confirm what is being repaired, what finish is expected and what is outside the agreed scope. If opening something reveals hidden damage, the next step should be discussed before the work expands.
For regulated or structural work, the right provider and permit requirements need to be established. The CSLB's hiring guidance explains the distinction, and our handyman-versus-contractor article provides practical examples.
What happens at the end?
Check the repaired item's operation together where appropriate. Ask about drying or curing time and any use restrictions. A freshly applied sealant or finish may need time before water exposure or normal use. Keep product information when it may help with future upkeep.
