Choose the person for the actual scope of the project. Small maintenance and repair tasks may fit a handyman service. Work involving permits, structural changes, regulated systems or a project outside the minor-work exemption requires an appropriately licensed contractor.
A handyman is a description of services, not a separate California contractor license. Some people advertising handyman work are licensed contractors; others operate under the minor-work exemption. Ask which applies instead of assuming the business name answers the question.
Where a handyman can be useful
Household punch lists often include sticking cabinet doors, loose trim, furniture assembly, picture hanging and adjustments to door hardware. These tasks can be convenient to discuss with one provider. The final scope still depends on the property, mounting conditions, materials and applicable rules.
Diamond Handyman Service is an unlicensed contractor operating as a handyman. We handle work within that scope. We do not describe a project as exempt merely because it can be completed quickly or because the customer supplies materials.
When to start with a licensed contractor
Structural alterations, major renovations and work requiring a permit belong with a qualified licensed contractor. Electrical, plumbing, roofing and heating or cooling projects may call for a particular trade. A general building contractor and a specialty contractor do not necessarily have interchangeable scopes.
If you are removing a wall, changing a service panel, replacing a roof or moving building systems, start by identifying the qualified trade and approvals. A small visible repair can also reveal a larger underlying issue that changes who should do the work.
Permits and licensing are separate checks
The California Contractors State License Board explains licensing triggers and the limits of minor work. The exemption includes a project-value limit, no required permit and restrictions on additional workers. A larger project cannot be broken into smaller contracts simply to fit the exemption.
For permit questions, use the City of Chico Building Division or the department responsible for the property's jurisdiction. Having the homeowner apply for a permit does not remove the worker's licensing requirements. Our Chico permit guide provides a starting point.
Compare the complete job, not just its label
Consider a damaged bathroom wall. Filling a small dry hole is different from opening a wet wall, repairing piping and rebuilding a shower. Similarly, adjusting a cabinet hinge is different from relocating a kitchen. The label “repair” does not settle the scope.
Discuss what is included and what will happen if hidden damage appears. A useful answer identifies the limit of the agreed work and pauses for a decision if that limit is reached. It should not promise that every unknown condition can be handled during the same visit.
Questions worth asking before hiring
Ask who will perform the work, whether the scope requires a license or permit, and what materials or finish work are included. For licensed work, verify the license's status and classification directly with CSLB. Insurance and licensing are different matters; one does not establish the other.
Avoid relying on blanket promises about immediate availability, guaranteed savings or a trade being unnecessary for every replacement. A good scope description is more useful than a broad sales claim.
Can several small jobs be discussed together?
Yes. Tell us about the complete list so we can determine which work fits. Our multi-task visit page describes common household projects. Grouping requests is useful for planning, but it does not bypass limits on the overall work.
Not sure who to call?
You can contact Diamond with a plain description of the problem. You do not need to know the trade name first. If the project requires a licensed specialist or falls outside our services, we should identify that before scheduling the work. Browse handyman services in Chico for examples.
